As many know I am into outdoor survival and camping. I feel very at home being in nature and going out into the woods with the bare minimum of equipment really connects you to the beauty of the wilderness. The classic survival scenario in that respect is getting lost and only having some sort of cutting tool with you. There's an ongoing debate on if that should be a knife, hatchet, or saw (machete's, axes, and other tools come up sometimes too).
I've always been a hatchet guy (specifically my Estwing Sportsman's Hatchet); I can do pretty much all camp tasks and survival tasks with my trusty hatchet. But then a thought occurred to me: What if you lost or broke your cutting tool? Could you survive with nothing? That's when I came across flint knapping a while back. Instantly it interested me and it's fun to do. It also answered the age old question I had as a kid: How did Native Americans carve rock into arrowheads? Well, they knapped them.
One of my favorite personalities in the survival community is Dave Canterbury. He runs The Pathfinder School/Store out of Ohio (a place I'd love to visit one day). He has many videos online about how to survive in the woods and he is one of my main authorities I go to regarding outdoor bushcraft, primitive skills, and gear reviews -- all serious outdoorsmen know him and most hold him in very high esteem. I just wanted to share with my readers his video on knapping rock, and why it IS indeed possible to survive with NOTHING if you have the knowledge. Do you think you could survive in the wilderness with nothing but the shirt on you back? If not, check out this video (and the others on his channel).
